How Do I Deal with Teeth Sensitivity?

Teeth sensitivity is a pretty common problem. If you always feel a tinge of sharp pain when you eat hot or cold food, then you are one among the many who suffer from this condition. While it can be frustrating to have sensitive teeth, this can easily be treated. With the right kind of treatment and care, you will soon be able to eat ice cream and sip on hot tea without the terrible feeling of sensitivity.

Why does this happen?

When teeth are healthy, they are protected by the enamel – a hard shell that covers the tooth. Over time and because of damage, the enamel gradually wears off, leaving your tooth exposed. Because the nerve endings are no longer protected, teeth become more sensitive to certain environments that have extreme temperatures.

How can I avoid this?

Prevention is key! While teeth sensitivity can be treated, it is still much better to practice good oral hygiene to avoid having to deal with this problem. Here are some simple steps you can do to keep your teeth protected:

Minimize bleaching – Constant bleaching will do more harm than good. Teeth whitening can cause temporary sensitivity which usually goes away after a couple of weeks. However, if you overdo bleaching, this can cause permanent damage.

Eat healthy food – Acidic food like sugar-filled treats and carbonated drinks eats away the enamel of the teeth and can also breed bacteria. Substitute unhealthy junk food with fruits and veggies that’s high in fiber.

Brush properly – Brushing the wrong way can wear out and damage your enamel. Be careful of brushing too hard as this can scratch teeth and hurt gums. The proper way to clean teeth is to brush slowly and carefully holding the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle. It is also essential to flossy regularly.

No cavities – Cavities and cracked teeth are naturally more sensitive than healthy teeth. If you have fillings that are starting to crack or wear off, it is advisable to have them fixed by your dentist.

Treatment Options

To determine the reason for your teeth sensitivity, your dentist will have to thoroughly check your teeth and mouth. Dentists will create a treatment program that will be best for your case. This can be treated with fluoride gels, sealants, fillings and special toothpastes for sensitive teeth. When treated early, sensitivity will be easier to fix. However, neglecting this dental issue can lead to worse problems.
